50 years ago the parks and Rec department in marblehead MA planted an Ennis Elm tree and stacked it out with a wire around it's trunk and wires to help it be stable until it took root. When they came back to remove the wire it had embedded itself in the bark of the tree. This is usually fatal to a tree. It's called girdling. But the tree survived and to this day has the prefect indention of the wire in the bark as if someone had pulled it's belt too tight. This work is a casting taken from the tree replicated in resin. The wire stretching over the casing represents the cause and the rift underneath is the effect.
