This painting could not have come about without the Velvet Underground’s song Venus in Furs which references the novel by the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Visually I was again thinking of Beardsley and his whiplash curves, which here are symbolizing a chilly wind. Though I still hold to my cadmium usage notice they are just small touches on areas that symbolize an internal fire but most of the flesh is cooler whites and creams. I was also playing with texture, the shininess of the satin dress, the leather and varying furs of the coat. Which I designed and made. I was also playing up the contrast of the very light, almost whites with the very dark almost blacks.
