This is one of my few unplanned paintings. I had a model come to pose and she brought her daughter with her. The daughter was unhappy with her mother that day and also unhappy to be in the studio with us. She was wearing an oversized white shirt which looked on her a bit like a straight jacket and that made me think of Electra, who in the Libation Bearers, the second play in Aeschylus’ Oresteia, always seems to me to have been made a bit crazed by her mother’s killing of her father. This painting is one of my first forays using metal leaf and I was thinking about positive and negative space and the stylization of pattern in the chair.
