Inaugural Artist for the Mayor's Gallery at Atlanta City Hall

Atlanta, Georgia- April 1, 2018.  Marcella Hayes Muhammad is the inaugural artist in the newly launched Mayor’s Gallery at Atlanta City Hall. As her signature style of Plastic Space Abstraction The Jazz of Art was hung, a crowd of onlookers gathered and applauded when the exhibit was completed!  Marcella’s work sets a colorful and energetic tone to the entry to the Atlanta Mayor’s Executive suites.

“I am honored to be the inaugural artist invited to showcase my signature style of Plastic Space abstraction musical collection. It is so rewarding to see people enjoy my work and to receive such positive reviews. I am thankful to our Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms,  Camille Love, executive director of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Kevin Sipp, Project Coordinator at Gallery 72 for this great opportunity.”

The exhibit includes original oils on canvas featuring Marcella’s original style of Plastic Space. The Musical Collection explores the historical origins of instruments from Africa to current instruments around the world. A few pieces of The Mask Collection are included which explore positive and celebratory masks from cultures aground the world.

Marcella was born in Tuskegee Alabama as the first child to a young Tuskegee Airman’s family. She grew up traveling around the world and gaining a broad world perspective.  As a teenager, a visit to the Picasso Museum in Paris, France would have an impact on her later artwork.  Over the years, Marcella Hayes Muhammad developed her own signature style of figurative abstraction she named “Plastic Space” known for its vibrant colors, intricate detail and unique perspective.  Instead of dissecting the subject into visual planes as in Picasso’s cubism, Marcella goes beyond flat linear planes and explores the curvature of light around an object from a three dimensional perspective.

After a successful career as a teacher, Marcella retired and relocated to the Atlanta area to make it her home and continue to develop her visual arts. Marcella established her art business as Maruva Studio in 1996, and in the year 2000 she incorporated to MARUVA DQ, Inc. Samples of her works are available online at www.maruvadq.com. The Mayor’s Gallery at City Hall is a space to promote and exhibit the works of accomplished Atlanta based artists and help emerging and underrepresented Atlanta art professionals receive major recognition for their artwork. With the gallery set at the entry of the Mayor’s Executive suites, visiting officials, dignitaries and citizens will experience a welcoming and diverse example of art and culture in Atlanta.

The 13 piece original musical artwork collection of Marcella Hayes Muhammad is on exhibition from April 1 and extended through the Jazz Festival – May 31, 2018.
