Sankofa by Marcella Hayes Muhammad Image: The sankofa bird appears frequently in traditional Akan art, and has also been adopted as an important symbol in an African-American and African Diaspora context to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future. I challenged myself to represent this tradition using my signature style of Plasticism. By taking artistic license, I abstracted the bird to create a flurry of motion and the background represents the chicken wire enclosure showing a lack of freedom that Black people experience in so many ways.
