This painting was created as a reaction to the young black women who feel the need to be blond, have long false nails, extra long eyelashes, loads of makeup, and wear very revealing dresses to be noticed. She does not realize the actual out of character image she has created with the false trappings. She is reading a book titled Enigma that represents the fact that she does not really know who she is.
