TRANSPARENT SCREENS
1983-1989
The transparent screens are free standing sculptures. They are oil with Magna medium on glass or Plexiglas. There is a sense of unlimited space in the flow of translucent color which ranges from blues through pink and grey to the clear, unpainted support. They are picture windows opening to an expansive sky. They are barriers standing in the middle of the room. Thus the object that suggests expansion, bars expansion. When you focus on the screen, you are free to wander visually in space. Looking through the screen encloses you in the room. There is duality. Open and closed, near and far switch place.
SCREEN I is made of three glass panels, each 16” x 60” (5’ x 4’), connected by 90 pressure hinges. In each panel there is a color field which goes from clear support through a variety of colors to blues: with increased opacity. The two outer panels are light at the top, the mid panel is dark at the top. The outer panels are bordered by strips of color which are applied with more freedom than the central color fields. SCREEN I is like a night sky opening to the first light of day. SCREEN I is a vista bound.
“The truth of any kind of experience is based on the number of points of view you can see. The higher the number the closer you are to understanding. The work is a search for integration of personal vision and “reality”. I’m curious about what is going on. This takes form in (1) the “First Light” series of meditative color field oils, (2) the illusory self-revelation of the “Ablate” paper assemblages, and (3) the translucent “Screen” sculptures. The three bodies of work are different facets. I like showing them together. It broadens people.” (4/27/86)
“The evanescence, illusion and duality of both the Firstlight and the Screen series lead to a change of point of view or understanding of learning about that which is hidden or redefined by its context as in the Ablate and AB series. In these the eye is initially directed to the picture plane and then underneath to mirror in which you see your-self. All of my work is the result of a fascination with complex levels of information and what that information communicates.” (Undated)
