Sustaining (Unseen) reflects on the 'hidden labour' that goes into supporting family and community. It is inspired by the pioneering work of Dr Suzanne Simard, who discovered that trees communicate through their roots with 'hub' or 'mother' trees being key. I imagined these hidden roots as an expanding presence beneath the soil surface, working around obstacles, all invisible from above ground.
Forest Conservation Sciences Ecologist, Dr Suzanne Simard discovered that trees support each other more than we knew. ‘Mother trees’ are the older seasoned trees in a forest. These vital trees anchor the forest's underground fungal network, acting as central hubs that share water, nutrients, and chemical signals with younger saplings. This piece has been shown in two local exhibitions.
