Linnea Martina | Canadian Visual Artist. Alberta’s vast mountains & never ending prairie give her inspiration “Love for the unspoken words of nature”
MessageLinnea is a graduate from the Alberta University of the Arts with a BFA majoring in Jewellery & Metalsmithing. She is a Canadian Visual Artist, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, who now resides in the small Towne of Langdon (The Good Luck Towne). Where friends are easily made and living is simple as it can get with the same feeling of freedom you felt as a kid growing up when the street lights were your call to get back home. Linnea transitioned to painting on a whim of a friend that was going to take her artwork sell at a festival and the rest is left in paint! Her painting inspiration derives from Alberta’s vast mountains and never ending prairie; “Love for the unspoken words of nature”. Linnea
Linnea's work is in the form of contemporary landscapes, abstract vibrations and snapshot details of nature. You can see her work in a variety of different mediums: Watercolour, Acrylic and the ancient and re-emerging medium of Encaustic.
"As an artist, I am drawn to the fluidity and spontaneity of watercolour, a medium often associated with traditional techniques and delicate landscapes. However, I aim to push the boundaries of this perception by using nontraditional watercolour surfaces, infusing my work with a contemporary energy. The unconventional use of watercolour and inks allow for unexpected textures, layers and interactions, giving the paintings a modern feel that contrasts with the medium’s historic reputation.
My process involves working on multiple pieces simultaneously. This approach enables a dynamic and intuitive flow between works. At times, I move swiftly and decisively, allowing the paint to capture a fleeting moment. In other instances, I engage more intensely with a piece, lingering to develop intricate layers and details. Through this duality—of speed and precision—I explore the tension between control and release, tradition and innovation.
Ultimately, my work seeks to reframe watercolour within the context of contemporary art, challenging preconceived notions of what this medium can achieve."
Natures unseen vibrations and energy.
Linnea doesn’t necessarily always ponder what is happening above ground but below, seismic happenings! Reflecting on space, time, relationships, interactions between people and energy. Along with studying the properties of making her own pigments (from nature) in watercolour and pastels, again she brings new energy in “living” paintings from hand forged pigments.
Her intention; to spark personal recollections in the viewer from an unconventional perspective, carefully building layers upon layers, leaving a translucent history, using depth colour, luminescence, sculptural textures and surface transitions, transitions of slight sodalities. Her work will change every time you study it.
Today you'll find Linnea in her studio painting, newly dabbling in ceramics. Linnea’s work can be seen at Guest showings in Galleries within Alberta and a constant showing at juried Art Show & Sales. Linnea’s is an active member of the Riverview Artists group & Leighton Centre. You can find Linnea's CV .
