Candice Lau is an artist working with both clay and leather. 'Half Thief' is a work developed around the thief knot, continuing her exploration of how clay, at different stages of drying, can hold its form while still remaining pliable enough to be woven, looped, and tightened through itself. In these pieces, clay behaves almost like leather: responsive to tension, pressure, and the repeated gestures of the hand. As it sets, it fixes these movements in place, preserving a sense of entanglement, restraint, and the memory of making.
