A morning drive along the River Road between Lajitas and Presidio last January inspired this Big Bend country landscape painting. While grasses and scattered flowers lined the banks of the Rio Grande, snow-capped peaks framed the big river. The contrast in seasons begged to be painted!
framed in copper wood molding under UV protective acrylic
This small, highly detailed original pastel painting is packed with nooks and crannies to explore, peaks to climb ... it's one of those landscapes you can lose yourself in and leave the noisy world of the city behind.
As I painted the snow on the mountains along the Big River, I let the rough, toothy surface of the archival pastel paper pick up only what it chose to, lending the sprinkling of "snow" into the crevasses. I wanted to show the ruggedness of the borderlands, but also, the soft beauty.
