winter along the River Road through Big Bend Ranch State Park in the Texas borderlands
Rare high desert snow capped the mountains along the lower Rio Grande one morning as we drove the River Road through Big Bend Ranch State Park between Lajitas and Presidio, Texas. One of the many delights along the river that wintry morning was seeing the snowy peaks above autumn grasses and lush foliage, even wildflowers blooming along the river, which creates its own climate zone in the Far West Texas borderlands.
It was frigid that morning, but we kept stopping along the road to take in the views of the fresh snowfall on the sierras. Our animal companions usually accompany us on drives such as this. Our African Grey parrot had clamped himself to my wrist so he could see better, and every time I got out to take a picture, he sat patiently as I focused. Once the lens cover went back on, he'd say, "Brrrrrr!" and back into the warm truck we'd go.
