Casa Grande crowns the Chisos Basin, Big Bend National Park-
The Chisos Mountains crown the Chihuahuan Desert's Big Bend National Park, and Casa Grande crowns the Chisos. On the morning that inspired this oil painting, we drove from the desert floor to the high Chisos Basin. Below, ice fog blanketed cactus and creosote. As we climbed into the mountains, we broke out of the fog and into crisp blue sky. Oaks still shimmered with autumn color, but my breath frosted as I hiked around the base of Casa Grande. Softly, silently, clouds began to wrap the stately peak, and soon, I stood in the sky. When I painted that New Year's Day experience, I tried to convey that sense of union between land and sky.
