A pull-off on the high road between Taos and Santa Fe seemed the perfect spot to set up my easel and paint the Rio Grande Gorge one hot June afternoon. When the lovely clouds churned up a thunderstorm, I painted faster and faster. It thundered, it lightninged, it rained. The wind gusted so strong, I folded my plein air easel to hold in my lap as I sat on the ground. (One hand painting, the other, hanging onto the easel.) Finally, Jim coaxed me back to the truck. The title seemed obvious to me-- a river below, a rainstorm above, and color all around me. This was among the first of my "serious" plein air landscapes.
