Ocotillo, with its spindly thorny stalks ending in surprisingly red flower clusters, is often the only thing to break the vast desert horizon. This isolated cluster in Big Bend stood in silhouette against soft colors floating down from the heavens at sunrise. I stood outside our RV, shivering and sipping coffee as Terlingua woke from the dark of night, and imagined this fifteen foot tall desert plant yawning and stretching with me.
