The Davis Mts of Far West Texas are still covered with working ranches and people who live their lives on land pioneered by their great-grandparents. We'd visited an very elderly spinster rancher on such a ranch this summer day. Driving the five miles back to the "highway" we had to stop for an entire herd of cattle, who insisted they had the right of way on the dusty, deeply rutted ranch road. As the cattle moseyed off to graze a new pasture, a young cowboy in a battered pickup truck drove past us, then gunned toward the highway in a cloud of dust. We wondered how many years it would take him to realize he was leaving a paradise he'd been lucky to be born into.
