The volcanic rock palisades of the Davis Mountains tower above steep draws cut into the mountainsides by flash rains. Normally a dry creek, after a heavy rain water runs noisily down these boulders making miniature waterfalls all the way to the grasslands below. They only last a day, sometimes only hours, which makes seeing the draw turn into a creek a special occasion. After a rain, our dogs always bee-line to the draw in hopes of wading. I think that illustrates how West Texans endure dry times, always hoping we'll muddy our boots.
Instead of looking down into the draw, I stood on a boulder with water surrounding me and looked upstream, toward the mountain, making this view more intimate and immediate. I want you to feel the spray of water coming off that rock!
