Do you still look up and find dragons and horses and faces in clouds? I do! Because the sky is an unending story. Your imagination gets to fill in the next sentence, and the next, for as long as you watch a cloud.
In painting this original 5" x 7" miniature oil, I used a few soft blues and violets and a dozen ethereal whites—yellow white, lilac white, pink white all show up in the wrinkled face of this wind-whipped cloud. Loose, heavy brushwork suggests a moment suspended in time. This cloud cluster feels both explosive and calm. It could go either way. But for now the bold whites of the cumulus and the soft violet ribbon of cloud behind it are enjoying a lively conversation. (Of course they’re enjoying themselves here. Opposites attract!)
Why do we insist on finding shapes in clouds? Seeing patterns calms the chaos. We find solace in the familiar, whether it’s sinking into the quiet refuge of a favorite chair in a dark corner, or gazing at shapes floating across the blue sky above us.
Gaze at this intimate glimpse clouds conversing. Eavesdrop and hear their stories, tales of storms brewing and calm sunrises. Tomorrow, the clouds and their stories will be quite different, and yet, you’ll know it’s the same sky.
This mini oil is on archival Gessobord, which makes it suitable for display on a table easel or propped on a shelf, whether you choose to frame it or not. It fits anywhere, offering a slice of serenity that encourages daydreams and quiet moments of introspection. No apologies necessary if you eavesdrop.
