Bishop's Lodge, Santa Fe, New Mexico
custom conservation framed under museum glass
Bishop's Lodge in Santa Fe is a favorite Northeastern resort, but it was once home to Archbishop Lamy, inspiration for Willa Cather's DEATH COMES TO THE ARCHBISHOP. A dusting of snow and late afternoon light emphasized the reverence of this simple high desert adobe.
This small vertical landscape painting is very detailed, and the warm wash of pastel underpainting shines through to create an inner glow, like Santa Fe experiences in winter.
I did this pastel in Santa Fe, with my easel set up on the kitchen table of our RV. Not the way I usually paint, but I wanted to capture this while I still felt the magic of place. Back in my studio, with good light and all my paints, I detailed and tweaked it, but the essence was done with snow falling outside the window of our temporary homesite in New Mexico.
