"Little torches", ocotillo illuminate the desert with scarlet flowers born on spindly stalks ten to twenty feet high. These stunning, long-lived plants, which look dead most of the year, congregate in forest-like clusters that weave color into the sky when they bloom. In Big Bend, it's not uncommon to find an ocotillo blooming in December or January, offering a true gift from the desert.
