“The Law of Justice” is a painting about justice. It was my first real plein air painting. I gathered with a group of talented plein air painters in Atlanta who were invited to paint at a festival called “Uptown on the Lawn.” I had just moved to Atlanta, and was not at all interested in the concrete jungle and cityscape I found myself in. But the festival had balloons that said “THE LAWN,” and I found myself completely amused by the shiny, metallic surfaces and shapes the balloons communicated. I decided to paint “THE LAW” as balloons floating away because we all want justice…until it comes to us. When we are guilty, we tend to excuse ourselves as the exceptions, or downplay the choices we made. When it comes to justice, we can’t have our cake and eat it too. If justice changes based on circumstances, people, or ideas, then it’s not actually justice. This painting is a comical, clownish way of showing our true nature- to desire justice until we ourselves are guilty.
