Bloom, created in collaboration with the Oregon Origins Project IV: Birth of Cascadia, is a painting delving into Oregon’s volcanic geological epoch that formed the High Cascades. The Oregon Origins Project is a collaborative project spearheaded by Portland, Oregon composer Matthew Packwood who composed a 10-movement string symphony based on 10 major geological epochs of Oregon with guidance from geologist Ian Madin. Bloom complements the symphony’s 7th movement of the same title, and was projected on a large screen behind the orchestra for the duration of the movement during the live performances. The painting’s composition is inspired by lidar imaging of Newberry Volcano and its caldera and cinder cones. lidar imaging, a mapping technology using lasers, renders geological formations visible that would otherwise be obscured by trees and the understory.
