MessageCollection: The Yearbook Revisited
The Yearbook Revisited series recalls student life of the mid-20th century as viewed through a 21st century lens. As I pored through multiple yearbooks from the sixties and seventies, I wondered about the people and the culture depicted on those monochrome pages. Who did they marry? What kind of work did they do? Are they still alive? Why was my school so white?
Themes of hopes, dreams, regret, popularity, angst and coming of age appear in this collection of paintings. Cultural markers like big hair and Classic Coke bottles may elicit a pleasant wave of nostalgia for those who lived it, but may also unearth long-buried stories of youth—some ready to share, others better left untold. For those who did not live it, The Yearbook Revisited offers a glimpse into the social climate experienced by an earlier generation. Viewing it through the filter of time is sure to open conversations about how much has changed and how much has remained the same.
