Laura Hunt
Fort Worth, TX
Laura Hunt's paintings explore themes of human relationships, emotions, and empathy along with human interaction with the landscape and nature.
MessageLaura’s origins in rural Central Texas along with her work with charitable organizations have shaped how she perceives the lives of everyday people. Combining her love for abstraction with her interest in the human face and figure, Laura’s mixed media paintings reveal an attraction to landscapes and interiors, but most of all, the people who populate them.
Among Laura’s recent honors are First Place Mixed Media for Art in the Garden (Fort Worth, TX) and Viewer Favorite for the North Richland Hills Pop Up Gallery. Her work has been featured in Artsy Shark’s Summer 2019 Artist Showcase, and in Alyson Stanfield’s Art Biz Success newsletter. She has been a regular exhibitor in Historic Fort Worth’s annual show Preservation is the Art of the City. Recent juried exhibitions include 5 x 9 Online Art Exhibit (North Richland Hills, TX), Art Room’s Small Works Show (Fort Worth, TX), Social Landscapes at Oak Cliff Cultural Center (Dallas, TX), and the upcoming Stage West Gallery Space for 2020. In addition, she is currently collaborating with a homeless services agency to create 26 portraits in a year’s time with the objective of personalizing the issue of homelessness.
Statement
I paint archetypal subjects in a simplified manner to tell a universal story. Several themes are evident in my figurative art. Human relationships. Human emotion. Social issues. Empathy. Color and body language convey the moment’s emotion, the life experienced by each subject. My characters dwell in ambiguous but familiar environments, inviting the viewer into the narrative to understand, but perhaps also to empathize.
Acrylic paint is my foundational medium. Sometimes it stands alone, but I often integrate patterned paper, marks, a scrap of vintage map or cardboard in the work. I work from several sources, including live sketching, vintage photographs, my imagination, and my own photographic library.
My influences include folk and tribal art, the Abstract Expressionists, and the figurative work of David Park and David Bates.
