Carl Kauba (1865-1922) was an Austrian sculptor. His work is characterized in particular by representations of Native Americans and animal figures.
The sculptor was born 1865 in Vienna, Austria and reached fame because of his stunning and impressive figures of Indians as well as of humans. His realistic statues are great portrays of his passionate interest in the life and the traditions of the culture as well as the art of the Native Americans.
Although he signed “Carl”, Kauba’s birth certificate officially identifies him as “Karl” son of an Austrian shoemaker. He most likely never visited America himself but was inspired by the romantic stories written by the German, Carl May and many photographers and illustrations which he had seen. Also inspired by the possessions of a complete Western saddle and other Indian artifacts that an American friend from Ohio sent as gifts.
In contrast to most artists, Kauba’s success as a businessman was equal to his artistic achievements. He worked in a studio in his home and personally directed the casting of his clay models in local foundries.
Some of the characteristics of a real original made by Kauba are the very filigree details as well as a pretty much detailed surface of his bronze sculptures. In 1922 Kauba died in Vienna.
