In early 2024, news of the polyphagous borer beetle threatening Hyde Park’s trees compelled me to document the park before it changed forever. Through regular visits, I came to see Hyde Park not only as a cherished community space but also as a vital sanctuary, where lakes, canopy, and seasonal rhythms sustain a rich web of life. For the Greater Good depicts the first day that heavy machinery was brought in to fell the the heavily borer-infested trees on the lake islands —necessary work to preserve the park’s significant older trees, yet a poignant reminder of fragility and resilience within this urban ecosystem.
