Woman in Whale draws on the archetype of being “in the belly of the beast,” merging it with the experience of the labyrinth to reflect a transformative passage through darkness and uncertainty. Rendered in graphite, dye, and India ink on dyed muslin, the life-size figure is nested within the body of a whale—referencing the endangered Northern Right Whale, which migrates through the Jersey Shore. With fewer than 400 individuals remaining, the whale’s presence marks both ecological grief and the urgency of protection. The labyrinth embedded within the whale symbolizes the inner terrain the figure must navigate—an initiatory journey into the depths of the psyche and oceanic unconscious. The work evokes questions about what wisdom and meaning are lost as species vanish, and what remains possible when we allow ourselves to be reshaped by the more-than-human world.
