Whale Boat depicts a small vessel resting above a sleeping whale, whose body contains a labyrinth. The image is a meditation on the vast unknown beneath the surface—both oceanic and psychological. The whale, based on the critically endangered Northern Right Whale, becomes a container of mystery, memory, and myth. In this work, the self floats above the unconscious, waiting, sensing, but unable to fully grasp its depth. The labyrinth drawn into the whale form evokes the archetypal journey inward, referencing ancient symbols of transformation, navigation, and the night sea journey. Drawn in India ink and graphite on dyed muslin, the work is part of a larger series that situates human vulnerability and meaning-making within the ecological crisis and the more-than-human world.
