Inspired by the love of my mother.
When I look at it, I recall my favorite photo with my mother and sister on my wedding day. The sculpture captures the tangle of limbs, tension and immense love in the bond between a mother and her daughters. It’s a tripod form. It’s soda fired which is a time/labor intensive special type of atmospheric firing where a sodium carbonate mixture, suspended in water is sprayed into the kiln during the firing. When the sodium meets the flame it vaporizes and is carried through the kiln. The sodium lands on the work and interacts with the clay surface to create a glaze. It is interacting with the alumina, silica, and other minerals in the clay. Therefore, different clay bodies with different mineral content will interact to create different glaze effects. This sculpture was bare with a lobster slip on it, so the varied orange color was purely from the soda interacting with the clay body and slip! This is a firing process I won’t be visiting again so this is a very rare finish for my work.
