The Matador skull was gifted to me by a generous art friend and former studio mate. He was quite weathered and missing his horns. I first spray painted him burgundy, beaded almost the entire skull, and then decided I was not happy with the results. It was simply too bright. I proceeded to "unart" the entire creation, down to the bone. I repainted it a metallic charcoal grey, which allowed the former dark burgundy to show through in much more muted colors.
Then, I set to work re-beading with new beads.
The focal point hand blown glass bead embedded in his forehead was made by St. Paul, MN artist Mary Schwartz.
Vintage Capodimonte porcelain flowers adorn the eye and nasal cavities.
