This skull got an update in January 2023 as he was added to a frame background for easier display. He was renamed Boaz at the time of framing: Origin:Hebrew. Meaning:Swiftness
This Faux Skull (resin) features a large, oval moonstone I found in a rock shop in Santa Fe. The turquois patches above the eyes and along the jaw are stamped leather. Outlined with rows and rows of seed beads.
These skulls are so meditative to create, laying down strings of beads and meticulously (attempting) to keep them straight is so fun! I also like to scatter seed beads in certain areas to contribute a unique texture to the piece.
I started creating these skulls in the summer of 2021 - during the pandemic. My first ones were almost all mosaic tile and grout. I soon began experimenting with strings of beads, after taking a class from Katherine England. https://www.katherineengland.com/ This morphed into a new style combining many different techniques to create a very unique style. Growing up, my dad was a hunter and taxidermist, so animal skulls were a part of my life from a young age. Then I married a hunter myself, and the skull collection grew.
While hunting and skulls do not fit into my belief system, I can respect those who do enjoy hunting. I prefer to use faux resin skulls as my substrate, but will design on real skulls as well.
