Rare large bronze box used for storing gold weights from the Ashanti, with a crocodile on the top and drawings in relief of Akan weights. The wealthy, gold-rich Ashanti people developed the large and influential Ashanti Empire, along the Lake Volta and Gulf of Guinea, mainly in todays Ghana. The empire was founded in 1670, and the Ashanti capital Kumasi was founded in 1680.
