When I'm stuck, losing a sense of direction with my art, I sketch. This painting is a result of many quick sketches I made using thinned black paint on paper. I'd been at a loss for ideas to paint, so I took the vase holding a lone hydrangea I'd picked from my garden outside to my patio table. I considered the many values of that blue violet and the dancing feel of its contours as I drew with that paint. Each sketch I made became looser and looser and I began feeling lighter inside, no longer stuck. I decided to paint it in oils because I'd found that light again.
