This piece is part of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles” (Between Invisible Systems), a trans-disciplinary body of work of fiber, video, and performative dancing that unravels hidden systems of oppression in our daily lives. This project started during the initial stages of the 2021 protests in Colombia and was conceived as part of the whole project of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles.”
Entre camuflados translates into English as “Between camouflages.”
In this piece, I used images of native flowers in Colombia and the States: the Cattleya trianae and the Passiflora incarnata. These floral motifs relate to the duality that my identity embodies. Being a Colombian immigrant who has been in the States for about 15 years has put me in the middle of my two cultures, languages, and communities. I moved to the States when I was 25 years old, but my life is still impacted and molded by my experience of growing up in Bogotá. My relationship ties to Colombia through my family are highly strong. Navigating my two homelands physically, emotionally, and mentally is a process that I explore through the use and research of flowers related to my two homelands. Many times it feels like not fitting well in either one of the cultures, like being in a gap, or in between but every gap has a crack of light.
