This piece is part of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles” (Between Invisible Systems), a trans-disciplinary body of work of fiber, video, and performative dancing that unravels hidden systems of oppression in our daily lives. This project started during the initial stages of the 2021 protests in Colombia and was conceived as part of the whole project of “Entre Sistemas Invisibles.”
“Desde los cerros” translates into English as “from the hills.”
Bogotá was one of the main cities where the 2021 Columbian protests took place. The news communicated that people were coming from everywhere to protest, even “desde los cerros.” This sentence resonated with me, as my grandparents' house, my aunt's sewing shop, and my studio in Bogotá are on one of its cerros. Bogotá is embedded in the mountain range of los Andes. Wherever you are situated in Bogotá, you will see mountains around you. Monserrate is a 10,000-foot-high mountain that is a landmark of downtown. This place is ingrained in my imagination and memories, and it is in the background of my family pictures. A large part of my family lives in a neighborhood where this mountain easily can be seen. Monserrate still works as a compass when I am in Bogotá and its image is used subtly in this artwork.
