The quilt design is inspired by the pentagonal geometric form revealed in a cross section of the Franklinia alatamaha seed capsule. Cairo pentagonal tiling was selected for its unique ability to create multiple variations with assignment of color. The color range of Franklinia alatamaha leaves allows for distinct areas of color which also have interior variation and pronounced veining. Color blocking visually suggests papillon (butterfly) in alternating directions.
