Ginkgo trees are revered in Japanese culture which led to the selection of a Japanese pattern. The Japanese Shippo pattern (Shippo-tsunagi; 七宝つなぎ) consists of interlocking circles, symbolizing harmony and can appear as petals or stars. The literally interlocked ginkgo circles add an element of dimensionality, to the already lively movement caused by the shifting directionality of veining and range of color. The varied size of center circles also lend a playful quality.
