“Dependency | Cracking the Stereotypes” reflects on how a child’s environment is too often mistaken for their identity. It questions the tendency to translate circumstance into character; where talents, gifts, and potential are overshadowed by the weight of family hardship. Gradient tones evoke the innocence of childhood set against a stark horizon, asking what resources each child inherits at birth; some beginning with burdens, others with tools for success.
Part of the MyPOP (My Print on Poverty) collection, this work investigates social mobility and the contradictions between idealized prosperity and lived experience. By revealing the labyrinth of social and political structures that shape opportunity, the series challenges stereotypes of poverty and honors the resilience born from limited means and communal strength.
The surface is coated with a malleable wax texture, symbolizing both preservation and transformation. Layers of distressed collage serve as narrative devices; representing barriers, erosion, and the endurance required to rise beyond constraint.
