### *Autoritratto* (2022)
*Oil on paper, framed under glass*
In *Autoritratto*, Jerry Ross turns the principles of American Verismo inward, using the self-portrait not as an exercise in likeness alone, but as a form of self-examination. Painted in oil on paper, the work is built upon a powerful organization of light and dark masses. Deep shadows carve into the face and neck like a sculptor's chisel, creating an almost architectural structure that gives the portrait its striking presence.
The composition is anchored by the broad dark mass of the jacket, from which the illuminated face emerges. Curving locks of hair, rendered with energetic calligraphic brushwork, soften the geometry of the shadows and introduce a sense of movement and vitality. The glasses become a focal point, not through detail, but through their placement within the surrounding contrasts of value. Throughout the painting, the artist resists excessive finish, allowing visible brushstrokes and passages of non-finito to preserve the immediacy of observation.
Like many of Ross's self-portraits, *Autoritratto* reflects a lifelong search for identity through painting. Rather than presenting a polished idealization, the work reveals a thoughtful and introspective figure whose character emerges from the interplay of mass, light, and gesture. The portrait demonstrates a central tenet of American Verismo: that truth in painting is found not in photographic description, but in the honest organization of visual experience into a living harmony of lights and darks.
