Wilderstein Historical Site in Rhinebeck has a lot of significance in my family. My mom helped Daisy Suckley to get the place on the national historical registry, then worked as a docent there for many years. My dad built the gazebos, cleared the trails, and restored the beautiful Calvert Vaux landscape design. My son's 9th birthday consisted of a treasure hunt through the house, culminating in the top of the tower where his gifts were hidden. My two sisters had weddings there on the grounds. I myself have been there many times. SO, while I was visiting with my folks, I of course had to go paint the place at least one more time. The reason I include it in the "monsters and follies" series is partly just the timeline, but also because there are many aspects of 'folly' attached to the place, in terms of the ways people value ourselves, each other, those who have wealth, and history.
