I set up my easel in downtown Medford to capture a cute street corner there. I laid down the fundamental lines of the piece and then had to take my leave. So I finished it in Kansas that winter, and it slowly went abstract. The one moment I recalled [aside from a strange conversation] was when an older gent was crossing the street with his granddaughter [?] who was adorably dressed in gingham check and pigtails. He looked frightened as they scurried across the street, as if he were a matador trying to protect her from a charging bull. So I painted him in two or three different time zones, to try to catch the urgency of his movements.
