The Hindenburg was designed with helium (which doesn’t blow up) in mind. The Third Reich decided that helium was too expensive and difficult to source, so they went with hydrogen, because the one great, predictable thing about autocrats is that their hubris always is the source of their own downfall.
And so the Hindenburg, which was flying the Nazi swastika that night in Lakehurst, NJ, serves as the perfect disastrous metaphor for the overweening ambitions of Empire Sickness folks everywhere.
Go bigly bombastic, then blow your entire world up, messing up the lives of countless others while you do.
THAT is monstrous.
