Soft Chamber by Jeanne M. Connolly is a process-driven abstract work that explores interior space, organic form, and the transformation of painting into sculptural surface through the artist’s Couching Overlay Technique.
The painting was created without the use of a brush. Instead, water flow and gravity guide acrylic, watercolor, ink, and gouache across raw canvas, allowing pigment to bloom, pool, and settle in organic formations. The raw canvas actively participates in the composition, absorbing pigment and producing softened transitions between color and form.
Two atmospheric oval shapes emerge like interior chambers suspended within the painting. The lower chamber contains a concentrated violet center surrounded by warm ochres, muted rose, and layered purples that radiate outward in softened arcs. Above it, a lighter chamber glows with saffron, blush, and lavender undertones, its edges dissolving gently into the surrounding canvas.
Unlike other works in this body of work, Soft Chamber does not include a textile overlay. Instead, Connolly applies her Couching Overlay Technique directly onto the painted canvas, hand-couching sculptural loops of natural and acrylic fibers onto the surface. These circular forms echo the internal shapes of the painting while introducing dimensional structure and tactile presence.
The dialogue between fluid pigment and raised textile forms creates a composition that feels both intimate and architectural. Soft Chamber ultimately explores the idea of interior resonance—where color, movement, and form coexist within layered spaces of quiet energy.
