Material Bloom: Soft Atmosphere by Jeanne M. Connolly is a sculptural textile composition created from reclaimed zero-waste fabrics tufted into burlap. In this work, translucent textiles gather into a luminous cloud of color and texture, transforming discarded materials into a soft, atmospheric field.
Layers of sheer mesh, organza-like fabrics, and flexible fibers unfold across the surface in shades of rose pink, coral, pale mint, soft ivory, and warm amber. Unlike the more concentrated compositions within the Material Bloom series, this piece allows the fabrics to breathe, creating a sense of openness and light.
The translucent materials catch and diffuse light, allowing the composition to shift subtly as the viewer moves around it. Fragments of deeper color—violet, cobalt, and saffron—appear within the folds like hidden blossoms emerging from a mist of layered textiles.
Rather than forming a dense terrain, the fabrics here float outward in soft clusters that resemble drifting petals or suspended floral forms. The result is a composition that feels airy and expansive, suggesting the moment when a bloom begins to disperse into the surrounding space.
Mounted within a natural wood frame, Material Bloom: Soft Atmosphere completes the Material Bloom series by transforming reclaimed textiles into a luminous sculptural landscape where color, movement, and material memory converge.
