Mischievous Bears were created as I imagined what it would be like to have silly mischievous bears sleeping and climbing on a sewing machine, replacing a tree in the forest with the beautiful industrial age 1909 Singer sewing machine. Every part of the machine is beautifully embellished, made with pride in a way long forgotten.
The Bears were created in Bronze using the lost wax process. Each bear, one sleeping as if on the branch of a tree, while the others climb up using the spool and the wheel are frolicking and enjoying the day. Additional elements of spools and scissors were also created to enhance the scene.
The lost wax process is the creation of art, first in wax, then a ceramic shell is created. The wax is melted away leaving a single use mold. The molten bronze is poured into the mold. The process is finished by removing the shell along with additional metal created for the molten bronze to flow, and finished in a patina. For Mischievous Bears, I used a rainbow patina to add to the element of whimsy and fun.
Each bronze casting is unique. I perform every step of the process. While any one of the many steps can result in a disaster or create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. I hope you find Mischievous Bears to be fun and bring many joyous memories and help you to create your own story.
