eXistenz is Paused is an installation that explores the notion of reality as a computer simulation. It consists of a wall-based lightwork, video, and photo documentation. The main data the artwork is based on came from using an EEG sensor attached to the central processor of a laptop while it plays a looped clip from the 1999 Cronenberg film eXistenz.
Video documentation is shown of the laptop playing eXistenZ is Paused while an EEG sensor is placed on its central processing unit (CPU). The computer analyzes it’s own brainwaves while playing a movie whose subject is about a computer-generated reality.
This lightwork was created using the EEG data from the computer’s CPU. The detailed mesh in the background was created using 1 minute of EEG. This is repeated 4 times in a kaleidoscope pattern, referencing a computer’s ability to do multiple processes at the same time. The work then becomes a representation of computer thought or a computer’s point of view (POV).
