Opening Paths : The work of Imna Arroyo. Exhibition, Lyman Allyn Art Museum ,
625 Williams Street, New London, Connecticut
Opening reception: 5:00 PM, Friday, June 28, 2024
Exhibition dates: June 29 - September 28, 2024
Opening Paths exhibition explores the artist's emergence and path forward by showcasing a sampling of works in various disciplines and mediums from her early years (1968-1980's) when she began to assert her uniquely expressive afro-Caribbean agency; it then segues into Arroyo's 2022 mixed-media installation, Eleggua.
The centerpiece of the Eleggua installation is the sculpture, Balance of the World, in which the scale is presented holding the eye-shaped artist’s books. It is dedicated to Yoruba Orisha, Eshu/Elegguá. Eshu/Elegguá represents the crossroads of the world, and the opening of the paths. The floor-based installation, comprising over 37 elements, provides a perspective of this Orisha through the incorporation of paper, wood, metal and other materials.
The Eleggua installation reflects the artist’s connectedness to her Afro-Caribbean heritage, giving voice to the stories and rich traditions of her ancestors as she “...finds solace in the belief that art-making can be a form of healing” (Imna Arroyo, 2022).
