Artist Statement:
My life followed a widening spiral ever outward, expanding with my involvement in humanitarian assistance to over seventy countries during my eighty-one years of life. Simultaneously, the spiral symbolizes my inner life, greatly deepened by my husband's decade of dementia, as he taught me that intimacy grows as words are lost. Rilke's quote summarizes my bi-directional journey: "I lead my life in widening circles that reach out across the sky... I may not complete the last one, but I give myself to it."
Technique:
Hand-knit colored 28-gauge wire with seed pearls strung before creating the spiral pattern free-form into the spiral that leads the eye in both inward and outward directions.
