Prairie dropseed grass is a host plant for six species of butterflies and skippers, including the rare and endangered Dakota Skipper and Powershiek Skipperling. Native bees and other insects use it for nesting structures, and the seeds are a food source for native birds. The grass is native to the southern half of Wisconsin, but is considered endangered in six eastern states.
