Pedro Albizu Campos, the leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, once said, “They want the cage, but not the birds.” The phrase criticizes colonial powers—particularly the United States—for seeking control over Puerto Rico while disregarding the lives, needs, and dignity of its people. It’s a powerful metaphor for domination without compassion. Albizu dedicated his life to the struggle for liberation and justice. Today, he rests in this graveyard among many of Puerto Rico’s freedom fighters and great thinkers who shared his vision of a free and self-determined nation.
